Who it is for
Therapy dog work is for steady dogs and handlers who want to visit hospitals, schools, libraries, or senior communities. It is volunteer work, not a public access right. The dog should enjoy greeting a range of people, recover quickly from odd sounds, and take food or a pause instead of getting fizzy in a lobby. If your dog is wonderful at home in Jenkintown and worried in a bright hallway, we can still help. We may tell you the dog’s best job is being a great pet. That is a kind outcome. Pavlov's Pooch will not push a stressed dog into a reading-room program because the idea looked sweet online.
What happens
We start with an evaluation of greeting style, handling, and noise. Many therapy organizations in the region use a test that looks a lot like CGC plus medical-equipment surprises and clumsy petting. We prep those pieces with consent and with an exit if the dog says no. Skills include a polite approach, a settle beside a chair, taking treats gently, and ignoring another dog in a waiting area. Handler coaching is half the program. You will practice reading the dog’s mouth, eyes, and tail in real time. You will learn how to end a visit early without making it a scene. You will learn how to decline a crowd that wants to swarm. Greater Philadelphia has plenty of well-meaning people. Your job is to protect the dog so the dog can keep doing the work.
Timeline
Dogs with solid manners often need six to ten focused sessions plus volunteer-organization practice. Dogs who still jump or scramble at the door need obedience first. We quote after we have seen the dog. Call (267) 357-8109 to start with a free evaluation in your area.
What a good visit looks like
A good visit is short enough, quiet enough, and ended while the dog still looks soft. The handler watches the mouth and the eyes more than the people taking photos. The dog can take a treat politely, move away from a wheelchair wheel, and rest in a down when the conversation runs long. That picture is trained, not hoped for.
