Obedience

Who it is for

Who it is for

Obedience at Pavlov's Pooch is for family dogs who need sit, down, stay, place, heel-ish walking, and a recall you would actually trust near a park path. It is not a parade of military precision unless you ask for competition later. It is the set of skills that make a Media kitchen and a Manayunk third-floor walkup livable. James Whitaker and Maya Alvarez both teach this work. You are a fit if your dog knows the cues in the living room and loses them on the sidewalk, or if you have never taught the cues cleanly and you are tired of repeating the dog’s name like a chant.

What happens

We start by naming the three moments that wreck your week. For many households in Greater Philadelphia that list is the door, the leash clip, and dinner. Those moments become the curriculum. A sit that only happens when you show a treat pouch is not the goal. A sit that happens because the door predicts a sit is the goal. That is the Pavlov part, used on purpose. Lessons mix food, play, and real-life access. We teach place so guests can come in. We teach a down-stay that survives a dropped fork. We proof recall on your block with long lines before we talk about off-leash fantasies. If your dog is adolescent, we plan for the month when the brain gets noisy. If your dog is older, we respect joints and skip jumping drills that look impressive and help no one. You will practice between visits. We keep homework short enough for a weekday in your area. Video notes are welcome. We would rather see a messy 90-second clip than hear “we did not have time.”

Timeline

Four lessons can clean up a door routine and a leash start. Eight lessons is the more honest path if you want recall, place duration, and neighborhood proofing. Dogs with a long history of self-rewarding (squirrels, counters, the kids’ snacks) take more repetition. We will not sell you a seven-day personality swap. What success looks like in a real house

Success is a dog who goes to place when the food delivery arrives, who can wait while you unclip a kid’s coat, and who comes back from the edge of a Media park field on a long line. It is not a dog who never makes a teenager mistake. We will show you how to reset without a speech and how to keep paying the good choices so they stay expensive to ignore. If you already tried a group class and felt lost in the corner, private obedience in your area will feel different. We watch your hands. We change the picture. We do not shout over six other dogs.
